The history of the company is a part of the families history since 1892.
For over 130 years Winter & Company stands for quality and inspiring cover materials. What began in 1892 - with the founding of a collective company by two brothers - presents today a globally active enterprise in the fourth generation. With spirit for innovation, engagement for the environment and society as well as decades of experience Winter & Company offers their customers a unique choice of creative and high quality products.
1892
In Basel on 14th November 1892 the leather trader Carl Winter-Lawrence and his brother Franz Winter-Jäggi founded «Gebrüder C. & F. Winter, Leder en gros». The young enterprise grows through the relentless efforts of its owners.
1919
«Gebrüder Winter & Co.» as the enterprise is known in the second generation, and as one of the first family owned businesses in Switzerland, establishes a welfare fund for the employees after the First World War.
1956
When Philippe E. Winter joined the firm, the trade in artificial leather began. This contributed to a significant expansion of the business volume as well as an increase in profit.
1966
Winter & Company grows further and becomes even more international: with fully and part owned companies in Germany, UK, France, The Netherlands, Italy, Spain, USA, Russia and South Africa.
1967
Skivertex® was first registered in Switzerland, and then internationally, as a brand. Herewith begins the successful corporate strategy, built with our own brands. This was followed up by leather like products such as Pellaq® and Silktouch, expanding the range of Winter & Company.
1991
In the early days, the new product Ecorel® introduced the awareness of environmentally friendly materials to our range.
1995
With the founding of Winter & Co. (Hong Kong) Ltd. the enterprise gained a foothold in Asia. This was soon followed by the expansion into China (Winter & Company Shenzhen Ltd.), with sales offices in both Shanghai and Beijing.
2006
The distinctive building in Huntingdon UK is being refurbished and expanded to consolidate all the external warehouses at one location: as Winter & Company's paper logistics and converting centre in the UK.
2013
With Nikolai Winter and later Alexej Winter, the fourth generation joined the family enterprise.
Winter Group: Three Divisions, One Passion
The passion for coverings had its origin in leather. Philippe E. Winter, more than anyone else, possessed the knowledge of leather processing and how it contributes to the creation of new materials. This creativity first made it possible to design a product like Skivertex®, with a previously unachievable look of leather from a paper base. This passion has driven the Winter Group’s development and launch of countless products, not only utilised in, but also often driving and shaping, the market: from the finest genuine leather to coated paper, «Hightouch» materials, synthetic leather and the best parquet to technical fibres meeting the most rigorous material demands.
